MOVING TIPS

UPON LEAVING YOUR PRESENT HOME

Have the following services discontinued:

Gas

Electricity

Telephone

Fuel Oil

Water

Milk Delivery

Newspaper

Rubbish and Garbage

Pick items out for cleaning, storage (fur, clothes, etc.) and repair items (electrical, watches, etc.)

Close charge accounts or give new address to stores of financial
institutions where you have loans. If car or other property is
mortgaged, new financing may be necessary.

File “change of address” with post office and send change of
address cards to magazines and other periodicals.
If applicable, notify draft board.

Inform doctor, dentist and pediatrician so that possible recommendations may be made for you in new location. Obtain eyeglass prescriptions, medicines used regularly, and family records for new doctor.

Obtain transcript of each child’s school record.
Inform insurance companies or agents of new address and make certain your coverage continues on effect during the move.

If you owe state taxes and are moving out of state, take along tax forms or obtain the address where you can write for them. In case of a job change, obtain W-2 form from your past employer.

Have bank funds transferred from your checking or savings account.

Empty your safety deposit box: the bank will usually forward the contents by registered or insured mail to your new bank. (Especially if you are hesitant about jewelry or other valuables)
Have your appliances serviced for the trip.

Write or call the utility company in the city to which you are moving. Find out about necessary fees or deposits required for installation of services.

Notify your clergy of move so he may recommend someone in your new area.

Arrange for sufficient cash or travelers checks to cover cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in the city in which you are moving. Cash or a certified check is usually required by a transfer company.

CHOOSING A MOVING COMPANY

When it may be impractical for you to “investigate” the major moving companies, there are two things you can do to determine which mover is best for you.

·         First, you can discuss the matter with friends and neighbors who have moved long distance.

·         Second, you can check your local Better Business Bureau.  They can confirm the reliability and integrity of your moving company.

WHEN YOU MOVE

Call in your moving company representative and get an estimate.

 ·         When the mover arrives at your home, show him everything, including items to be moved from attics, basements, and garages. Tell him exactly what you want in the way of service - cartons, boxes, dish containers, accredited packers to prepare your goods for shipment.

·         Give him any information he should have about particular items: which should have their legs removed, which concern you the most.

·         Be sure to get a written estimate, setting forth the conditions and terms under which the mover is doing the job.

WHAT YOUR MOVER CAN AND CANNOT DO

·         Your mover can move you to better advantage during the second or third week in the month.  Movers are busiest at the very beginning and end of the month.

·         Accredited packers will prepare your goods for shipment, if you order packing service.  They use special cartons for lampshades, books, mattresses and sealed wardrobe boxes for clothing.

·         Special soft covers are provided for tables.  All furniture is carefully wrapped, padded, placed to ride securely.

·         You will need to make arrangements to take down venetian blinds, draperies, mirrors, window cornices and other items attached to the walls.  Have carpet tacks removed, but do not take up the carpets.  Charges for such services are not included in the transportation rate.

·         Your mover cannot disconnect or connect appliances requiring special wiring.

·         At your new home, accredited movers help make your room livable at time of unloading.
